It is contemporary in that it recognises the role that stress and pressure plays in creating fears and mental obstacles that get in the way of our performance and wellbeing.
What is Mental Toughness anyway?
Mental Toughness is a personality trait that comprises’resilience’ the ability to bounce back from setbacks and failures and ‘confidence’ the ability to spot and seize opportunities. Mental toughness can be measured and developed in both an individual and an organisation.
The Mental Toughness 4C’s framework comprises four pillars that can stand alone but are connected to form the overall definition above. They are:
- Control – measuring life control and emotional control
- Commitment – goal orientation and delivery orientation
These two form the ‘resilience’ part of the Mental Toughness definition.
- Challenge – stretching oneself and learning from everything
- Confidence – self belief in one’s abilities and inter personal confidence
These two form the ‘confidence’ part of the Mental Toughness definition.
The framework is based on a scientifically valid and reliable psychometric measure, MTQ48, developed by the “rock stars” of mental toughness, Professor Peter Clough and Doug Strycharczyk. Since its release in 2003 it has been used by thousands of individuals and organisations around the world.
Toughen Up or Soften Up?
In terms of mental toughness it’s about achieving a balance. Most people need to toughen up mentally to enable them to achieve more, whilst some people who are already too mentally tough need to soften up and become less selfish and more aware of the negative impact they have on other people. Using the MTQ48 measure enables you to draw a line in the sand about your mindset and then depending on your needs develop new routines and strategies to help you perform ‘in the zone’.
