The foundation to being mentally tough is a strong sense of self-identity. As Oscar Wilde says in this brilliant fridge magnet
Be yourself, everyone else is taken.
Oscar Wilde
This is about becoming self-aware enough to know who you are, what you stand for and why. It’s about learning to take pride in who you are and positively develop your ‘signature’ characteristics – those traits that make you special and unique.
This definition of who you are helps you develop mental boundaries which become your psychological armour to protect yourself against the wall of white noise you encounter everyday both from within and outside.
You know what is right and wrong in your world and this enables you to better control your destiny. This self-efficacy is contained within the Control C of the 4C’s of mental toughness.
