Paul Lyons is an experienced adviser who works with CEOs, Business Owners and Boards on the “what next” with their business and how best to manage the challenges and maximize the opportunities.
With extensive Asia Pacific recruitment experience as a CEO in start up and mature business structures much of my work has a recruitment sector or talent focus.
As an Adviser Paul is someone to talk with about you and your recruitment company, about your current reality and desired future state, the opportunities and challenges you face and how to work through them to get to where you want you and your business to go.
This relationship always starts with a conversation to ascertain whether there’s a chemistry between us and whether Paul can genuinely help you with your challenges or opportunities. There are different approaches for different situations.
It could be as a facilitator for a strategic planning session, as an adviser to the board or as a mentor to the owner(s) of smaller boutique recruitment agencies who want a respected external view or service providers to the recruitment industry who wish to connect with recruiters.

Let’s start with the here and now:
2014 to date
Independent Adviser, Speaker and Coach on People, Leadership and Culture.
Co-Founder and CEO of Mental Toughness Partners, Asia Pacific’s leading specialist hub for mental toughness measurement, resources and development.
Paul lives in Sydney with his family but in the recent past have also lived and worked in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
25 years experience as a CEO; 10 years with Michael Page in Australia and latterly Hong Kong as Asia Pacific MD and then 15 years with Ambition, the business Paul co-founded, in Sydney and Hong Kong.
1987 to 2013
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and then moving into recruitment Paul spent four years with Michael Page International in Manchester before transferring to Sydney in 1987. He became Australian Managing Director in March 1988 and Asia Pacific Managing Director based in Hong Kong in 1997.
With the help of a group of talented and supportive colleagues we grew the business from one office and fourteen people, to a network across Asia Pacific of six offices employing in excess of 250 people.
Leaving Michael Page in 1998 to “not die wondering” Paul co-founded Ambition, along with friend and business partner, Nick Waterworth.
As CEO he helped grow the company by establishing and building offices in Australia and Asia, launching new brands, establishing and acquiring new businesses and creating a positive “no dickheads, no passengers” internal culture. Paul was at the sharp end of the 2008 GFC and the challenging years that have followed but he is proud to say Ambition has since become a highly regarded international recruitment business employing over 200 people in six countries.
As my career has evolved, Paul has come to appreciate the importance of hiring and retaining top talent, building a positive and resilient culture and providing strong and inspirational leadership.
Paul has been an executive recruiter for over thirty years and there has been more change in the past two than the previous twenty-eight. Whilst technology changes what we do and what we can do, we still need commitment, character and relevant expertise to achieve our career aspirations, or to grow a successful brand and global business.
